Holguín achieves outstanding results in environmental protection
The extension to 38,85 of forest areas is among the indicators that distinguish Holguín province so far this year within the projects for the protection of the environment through the Life Task, implemented by the Cuban State.
Considering this result, which ranks the territory among the best indexes nationally, the science sector celebrated today the World Environment Day, which is held on every June 5th by resolution of the United Nations (UN).
The Bosque de Los Héroes, annex to the Plaza de la Revolución General Mayor Calixto García Iñiguez, was the setting for the commemoration, where several groups and researchers were recognized with the Provincial Award for the Environment due to their contributions in matters of environmental protection and the rational use of resources and means on each front for these purposes.
The distinctions in these cases were given collectively to the Lazaro Peña cigar factory in the city of Holguín, to the mountain research station in Pinares de Mayarí, to the Antonio Galvache Dorado geology museum, to the University of Moa, and the Community Center of Environmental Education Alejandro de Humboldt, of the Frank País municipality.
The most remarkable municipalities in the environmental protection actions were Rafael Freyre, Antilla and Urbano Noris, while in the category of legal persons the recognitions were for the researcher on agricultural issues Orelis Guerrero Leyva and the doctor of sciences Roberto Rodríguez Córdobas, of the Holguín University, specialized essentially in the environmental theme.
Ruberdanis Tamayo, territorial delegate of CITMA in Holguín, expressed, by summarizing the activity, that the province shows integral advances in the protection actions of the environment, either in the productive entities or in the social environment and specifically in the coastal and resuscitation projects of marine areas. In the latter case, he particularly highlighted the results that are already evident in Nipe Bay, where dolphins and other species began to return, away from that scenario a few years ago due to water pollution.
Ernesto Santiesteban Velázquez, first secretary of the Provincial Committee of the Cuba’s Communist Party in the eastern territory, attended the award ceremony for World Environment Day in Holguín.
