The extension to 38,85 of forest areas is among the indicators that distinguish Holguín province so far this year within the projects for the protection of the environment through the Life Task, implemented by the Cuban State.

Considering this result, which ranks the territory among the best indexes nationally, the science sector celebrated today the World Environment Day, which is held on every June 5th by resolution of the United Nations (UN).

The Bosque de Los Héroes, annex to the Plaza de la Revolución General Mayor Calixto García Iñiguez, was the setting for the commemoration, where several groups and researchers were recognized with the Provincial Award for the Environment due to their contributions in matters of environmental protection and the rational use of resources and means on each front for these purposes.

The distinctions in these cases were given collectively to the Lazaro Peña cigar factory in the city of Holguín, to the mountain research station in Pinares de Mayarí, to the Antonio Galvache Dorado geology museum, to the University of Moa, and the Community Center of Environmental Education Alejandro de Humboldt, of the Frank País municipality.

The most remarkable municipalities in the environmental protection actions were Rafael Freyre, Antilla and Urbano Noris, while in the category of legal persons the recognitions were for the researcher on agricultural issues Orelis Guerrero Leyva and the doctor of sciences Roberto Rodríguez Córdobas, of the Holguín University, specialized essentially in the environmental theme.

Ruberdanis Tamayo, territorial delegate of CITMA in Holguín, expressed, by summarizing the activity, that the province shows integral advances in the protection actions of the environment, either in the productive entities or in the social environment and specifically in the coastal and resuscitation projects of marine areas. In the latter case, he particularly highlighted the results that are already evident in Nipe Bay, where dolphins and other species began to return, away from that scenario a few years ago due to water pollution.

Ernesto Santiesteban Velázquez, first secretary of the Provincial Committee of the Cuba’s Communist Party in the eastern territory, attended the award ceremony for World Environment Day in Holguín.

The construction of basic housing cells (CBH) through the granting of subsidies to low-income families advances in the province of Holguín.

This variant enables family members, willing to solve their housing problems with their own effort, to have construction materials acquired with the subsidies granted.

The Council of Provincial Administration highlighted in a report about the task, that conciliation has been maintained for the processing of subsidies among the housing, bank and internal administrations, with the analyzes in the municipal groups, for the follow-up of the implementation as established.

By the end of 2018, the conclusion of more than 500 basic housing cells was reported in Holguín, while in this year so far it exceeds 200; more than 1160 are in the completion phase, and others are in the constructive phases of structure and foundation.

The Council of the Provincial Administration reiterated that the pending cases of last years have been prioritized, and an exhaustive analysis of the existing difficulties in the municipalities of "Calixto García", "Frank País", "Rafael Freyre ", Báguanos, Cueto, Mayarí and Holguín has been carried out.

The Housing and Trade Directorates keep the work aimed at guaranteeing the necessary resources in the sales areas, although these still do not meet all the demands, while it is required to increase the local production of construction materials, as informed by the Council of the Provincial Administration in Holguín.

Residents of various medical specialties such as dermatology, ophthalmology, maxillofacial, oncology and clinical laboratory from all over the country exposed in Holguín their scientific results on the application of Heberferon in patients with basal cell carcinomas of the skin.

The drug, produced by the Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology, shows high effectiveness which motivates therapists and health authorities to use it in primary and secondary care. Currently, it is part of the basic table of medicines.

Among the results presented in the national residents’ workshop, carried out in Holguín, there is a significant reduction in amputation and complex surgical interventions in areas of high recurrence such as nose, ear, eyelid and periocular region. Also the medication can reduce the appearance of new lesions or improve other tumors in different parts of the body.

The Heberferon is one of a kind in the world. The high response has allowed its expansion throughout the national territory. The province of Holguín exhibits one of the best results and is the first in the country that manages to incorporate the drug to all its polyclinics and hospitals, thanks to the systematic work and training of specialists in the territories. Today it has 30 clinical areas. In the last three years about 400 Holguín patients have been treated presenting a total or partial response and the territory accumulates an experience of more than one quinquennium in the use of the medicine.

Researches point out that people over 60 years old show the highest percent of incidence, with prevalence of males and white skin people. However, the coming phase includes the active research in health centers, aiming at analyzing all possible cases since other phototypes with base cell carcinomas of the skin are reported, indicating that any person exposed to the sun or by genetic factors can be affected.
