For Peace and Cubanness

The IV meeting of Cuban residents in Latin America and the Caribbean will be held in Mexico from October 18th until the 20th. So far, about 100 delegates from around 15 countries have confirmed their attendance.

As published by Prensa Latina today, the call for the appointment implies that it will take place "with a commitment to defend our nation and cultural identity, always moved by Martí’s and Fidel’s ideology."

Moreover, it is anticipated that it will be a forum of great patriotic sentiment, for peace and Cubanness, whose program includes holding discussion rounds, keynote lectures, cultural shows, and a tribute to personalities that contributed to the Revolution triumph, among other activities.

Cubans will arrive to give life to the encounter from nations such as Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Haiti, Honduras, Jamaica, Panama, Uruguay, Venezuela, Dominican Republic and Mexico, where they are residents.

The so-called "Dialogue of 78" was an initiative of the Cuban government to promote the strengthening of relations between nationals residing abroad and their homeland, a process that is proclaimed as continuous and irreversible.

Subsequently, three editions of La Nación and La Emigración conferences (1994, 1995 and 2004) and three other thematic meetings were held, the first of which Cubans were against the Helms-Burton Act, in January 1997.

In March 2008, the appointment was named “Cubans living abroad against the embargo and terrorism and in favor of freedom for the five heroes”; then, two years later, in January 2010, the call was to rise against the US siege and in defense of national sovereignty, according to Prensa Latina.

According to Granma newspaper, there are 157 associations of Cuban Residents Abroad (CRE) constituted in 72 countries. In addition, national and regional meetings of Cubans living abroad are held periodically and links between Cuba and those nations where Cubans reside are strengthened.

On the other hand, the website Cubadebate published that Cubans reside temporarily or permanently in more than 120 countries worldwide. This implies creating their families also abroad; however, the vast majority of descendants of these Cubans residing abroad declare themselves of Cuban nationality for their family and cultural ties, an invisible thread of idiosyncrasy that cannot be denied.
