Experiences in Holguin on the Effects of Climate Change
A group of scientific projects that contribute directly to the mitigation of the effects of climate change were exposed today in the first day of the Ecojoven event, which takes place in the city of Holguin.
The study of endemic species of the fauna of eastern Cuba, specifically amphibians and reptiles, was among the topics addressed during the session, in which some 30 young people participated with contributions to science and technological innovation.
This research contributes to inventories of collections and genera that may be vulnerable to increased temperature, indiscriminate felling, intense drought and abundant rainfall, among other consequences of climate variability, said David Fernandez, project specialist.
He pointed out that as part of the investigations the populations of some 16 species were studied, of which 12 are endemic to the karst hills of the eastern territory, ecosystems selected for monitoring.
During the event there were also photos, posters and audiovisual materials related to the Life Task, a plan by the Cuban state to reduce the vulnerability of coastal settlements in the face of the effects of climate change and the results of its application.
Among the programs presented were also the use of biogas as a renewable source of energy, the new collections of the Botanical Garden of Holguin and the treatment of solid waste.
Ecojoven aims to socialize and exchange experiences that pay tribute to the science, technology and innovation system, with the participation of members of the Youth Technical Brigades.
The base meeting, organized by the Center for Environmental Research and Services of Holguin, is part of the activities of the Provincial Day for the Environment Day, which will conclude on June 30.
