Expoambiente Holguín shows strategies to protect the ozone layer
The Cuban strategies for the protection of the ozone layer since the implementation of the Kigali Amendment, that was conceived in order to drastically reduce greenhouse gases and global warming, were included among the topics discussed on Thursday at Expoambiente -2019 which is held in the city of Holguín.
This event shows the results obtained during a year in the provincial environmental management, and the first day was dedicated to the initiatives created by the Cuban State for the conservation of that protective shield that in the stratosphere prevents harmful solar radiation from reaching the Earth, as a commitment to the amendment to the well-known Montreal Protocol of 1987.
The meeting was led by Doctor in Sciences Nelson Espinosa Pena, director of the Ozone Technical Unit in Cuba, who announced some of the most significant actions applied in the Island to pursuit the stability of the ozone concentration in the atmosphere.
In this sense, he highlighted the implementation of good refrigeration practices, designed to train the technicians of these trades in such a way that their methods do not emit substances that exhaust the layer.
The procedures involving refrigerant fluids, also called industrial refrigerants, such as chlorofluorocarbons and haloalkanes, he said, are threats to atmospheric ozone because they are gases with high fluoride and chlorine composition.
He also noted the joint actions with the Cuba’s Petroleum Union for the reactivation of a plant producing refrigerant gases derived from hydrocarbons that constitutes a great contribution to the substitution of imports in terms of chemical compounds that do not affect the ozone layer.
There was also discussed the potential of Pinares de Mayarí in Sierra de Nipe, where La Mensura National Park is located, for its exploitation as health and nature tourism.
This area of eastern Cuba has a climate regime different from the provincial and national average because of its position with respect to the Atlantic anticyclone and its mountainous conditions that make it suitable for the treatment and rehabilitation of various diseases through the climatotherapy and balneotherapy.
As part of the event there were also displayed in the exhibition area of the Cultural-Commercial Complex Plaza de La Marqueta of the city, experiences of environmental management from Holguín agencies, entities and institutions such as the Center for Research and Environmental Services, the delegation of the Ministry of Tourism and Lazaro Peña Cigar Factory, leader in the production of the brandsCriollo and Aroma.
Today, Expoambiente 2019 dedicates the final encounter to education about nature, with the presentation of papers on the importance of educational excursions to make aware about the protection of the environment.
