The Holguín herd on its 474 th anniversary
On April 4th, 1545, it was found the Holguín herd, in the lands currently occupied by the populous city whichlaterbecame the capital of the eastern Cuban province.
It took its name from the Spanish Captain García Holguín, who settled in this place 474 years ago, after returning from Mexico to where he traveled accompanying Pánfilo de Narváez to subdue Hernán Cortés, according to history records.
They say the aforementioned soldier occupied positions and made his fortune during his pilgrimage through Aztec lands, and accumulated merits that would greatly benefit him when he returned to Cuba to settle in the highlands of Maniabón.
With the passing of time, its herd became the genesis of what is now a populated city, the capital of the eastern Cuban province of Holguín, so the date of its settlement constitutes a reason for jubilation and celebration for the approximately 300 thousand inhabitants of the so-called Cuban City of Parks.
Near the foundational nucleus of the herd, just in front of the Julio Grave de Peralta park, popularly known as the parkLas Flores, there is a huge sculptural mural called Orígenes, a sort of tribute to Captain García Holguín, whose image appears within the frame with his headerect, as a symbol of the glory and majesty of the city of Holguín.
Since its inauguration several years ago, the sculptural mural is a special attraction for city dwellers and foreigners, who observe a history synthesisof for more than four centuries of existence.
The mural Orígenes is a place for reflection. When contemplating it, one can see in chronological order, the past, the present and the future of a town that was born, grew and developed in the place where the Holguín herd was founded 474 years ago.
