Technological innovations benefit Moa nickel plant

The Pedro Sotto Alba nickel factory in the municipality of Moa, Holguín, currently receives direct benefits of technological innovations as internal responses to the production process which also contribute to decrease imports and protect the environment.

For instance, Rodney Correa Suárez, specialist in industrial maintenance, is well known by his contributions to solve technical problems in the industry with the manufacture of a diaphragm incorporated to positive displacement pumps in the leaching and washing area of the plant to transfer suspensions and aggressive chemical liquids.

This element, usually imported from other countries, allows the passage of the substances through the valve to the discharge pipeline of the nickel installation.

In this respect, he added, the component bought in the international market has a short lifespan, which is why they decided make it here as a variant to help extend its period of duration at lower cost.

On the other hand, Teodoro Díaz Molina, surveyor of the mine belonging to the Moa nickel plant itself, he had the initiative to recycle plain wood boxes and disposable parcels to make objects such as beds, furniture, cradles and cabinets, without expenses nor damage to the atmosphere.

The innovator also stressed that all the implements created in this case are donated to kindergartens and he feels  great satisfaction to see how children have fun and take advantage of the fruit of his work. The Company Commander Pedro Sotto Alba was founded in July 1961 and its main corporate purpose is the production of mixed sulfur nickel and cobalt.
