Studies in hemophilia and other coagulation disorders benefit Holguin
The territorial center for the study and treatment of hemophilia andother coagulation disorders in Holguín acquired a high-tech equipment suitable for analysis at the level of first world countries, which evidences the quality of medical services in Cuba despite the economic, commercial and financial embargo imposed by the United States to the Island during 60 years.
Donated by the NovonordiskHaemophilia Foundation of Switzerland, the Coagulogrometer benefits the provinces of Camagüey, Las Tunas and Holguín, the latter is among the three Cuban locations with the highest case incidence, said Dr. YeniletEscalonaVives, specialist in Hematology and responsible for the project in the oriental territory.
It also allows to develop platelet function studies, dosage of all coagulation factors, full coagulogram, determination of thromboplastin and protamine sulfate test, she added.
With the start-up of the new implement, hundreds of people have been benefited from these territories in the east of Cuba, whose examinations and results are obtained in a single day, highlighted Martha Moreno Serrano, main specialist of the
laboratory.
In Holguín province there are 13 hemophilic patients in pediatric age, 26 adults and about 400 coagulation disorders in general, commented the hematologist YeniletEscalona.
Previously, patients were assisted with cryoprecipitates and frozen fresh plasma, having the risk of getting hepatitis or the virus of human immunodeficiency (HIV), but right now the treatment is from concentrates of factors eight and nine, what has caused a decrease in the number of admissions and complications, explained thespecialist.
The Study Center for Hemophilia, a genetic pathology that prevents normal blood coagulation, is located in the clinical laboratory of the Pediatric Hospital of Holguín Octavio de la Concepcióny Pedraja, but considering the magnitude of the investigations allowed by the Coagulogrometre, it is necessary to expand the facility, taking into account the territorial scope of it.
