Kirenia and Raúl: The solidarity of a couple from Holguin

In Río Grande del Sur, where the map of Brazil ends to give way to that of Uruguay, the married couple of doctors from Holguín, Kirenia Leyva Rojas and Raúl Aguilera Peláez, wrote their love story with the Brazilian people, who do not settlewith the departure of the doctors and they have let them feel their sadness through the social network Facebook.

"Doctor, why did you leave?" It is the cyber clamor that Kirenia receives from the grateful people of the municipality of Santa Victoria del Palmar, who already miss the tender and professional attention provided by the couple during two years and a half, in a city where the quality of the health system is as precarious as the rice and soy plantations are extensive.

"My husband and I, along with six other Cuban doctors, were the collaborators who were further in a small city with a very poor hospital. The complicated cases had to be referred to other citiesmore developed. We worked in the same health center and we both served a population of nine thousand inhabitants. It was a hardjob, each one assisted about 20 patients in the morning and another 20 in the afternoon, but we did not leave anyone helpless", says the doctor.

Raúl seconded her words and added that before Cubans reach the area, in the health center there were given only six appointments daily, so people queued from the previous day and throughout the whole night to be able to access the service.

"Our health center became a hospital, people preferred it because we dealt with emergencies."
In the South American giant, where native doctors often prefer to stay in the big cities and ignore the lament of the poor, the attention of the specialists in IntegralGeneral Medicine Kirenia and Raúl moved the residents.

"We had a patient who tattooed the map of Cuba on her hand to never forget her doctors. And a mother posted on her Facebook account that since we arrived she did not have to pay more to a pediatrician to take care of her daughter. Many mothers also gave us pictures of their children so that we could bring them back as souvenirs. The people were very grateful, because they were very humble ", they affirmed.

The people from Holguín focused on health promotion and prevention actions in a place where, due to cold weather, non-transmissible chronic diseases are common, although there are very high rates of AIDS patients. So they formed different groups of pregnant women, children, and hypertensive patients with diabetes mellitus and gave them educational talks, so that through knowledge they could improve their life quality.

"I'm going to be honest, we had to split up, because we could not handle the amount of people who came as they found out," says Kirenia.

Through this familiarization, the doctors managed to leave in Santa Victoria del Palmar, besides health, a piece of Cuban culture, especially the Caribbean custom of offering a warm kiss on the cheek.

"When we got there we saw cold people, they greeted each other with a "good day ", and later they came and kissed each other, that was on us", says Kirenia with nostalgic joy.

The common story of love and solidarity of the couple from Holguínstarted 15 years ago, shortly before initiating in the sister Venezuela their first internationalist mission. From then until now, Kirenia and Raúl, always supported by the family, have drunk from the glass of happiness, which consists of looking at your fellow being and knowing you have done well.
