Holguin v. Aedes Aegypti: from Concern to Strategy
It has not been worth the experience of several years facing the aedes aegypti, nor all the resources that have been arranged according to the anti-vector campaign: Holguín is still the worst province in the country with regard to the transmission of dengue, the levels of infestation, repeated indiscipline and everything that has to do with an epidemiological situation at the peak of its complexity.
The alert, the daughter of
self-criticism and shame, was expressed by Ernesto Santiesteban Velázquez, the leader of the Party here, in a meeting of the provincial temporary group for the confrontation against the arbovirosis, a space where he also asserted that the fact that Holguín stumbles on the same stones are not the fault of third parties, but the retrogression experienced in the tasks that are undertaken to deal with the mosquito.
FIRST ORDER TASK
"We are not going to get out of the problem if this battle is not assumed with discipline and rigor. Far from helping, there are people who have been unconcerned with the problem, and that is inadmissible, because the moment deserves that we demand greater responsibility to fulfill the task, "said Santiesteban Velázquez, claiming from the CEOs of the territory total commitment to a task "Of the first order, which requires even more demand, because the health of the people is at stake, and the context is not favorable", he emphasized.
Dr. Katia María Ochoa, provincial director of Public Health, said both dengue and Zika are a constant concern, and warned about some difficulties that involve the current strategist: "The research must be active, face to face, in direct contact with the population; We still do not do an adulticide job with quality, and we have not managed to complete the workforce for vector control ".
WITH THE RIGOR THAT IT DEMANDS
Half of the municipalities of Holguín (Moa, Mayarí, Banes, Urbano Noris, Calixto García, Holguín and Antilla) can already have some experience that involves aedes aegypti, and everything can be further complicated by the mobility of the mosquito, and the inefficiency in the confrontation, which also translates into closed housing for fumigation and little involvement of the community in the definitive solution of the problem.
No wonder the top party leader of the territory said that the Prosecutor's Office and the PNR will act in the face of citizen irresponsibility, and said that this is not just a health problem. "The battle is collective," he said.
And certainly the solution is not only in the hands of the Health sector. That is known to the principal managers of the territory's agencies, who denied that there was any difficulty in fulfilling the task entrusted to them.
For his part, Julio César Estupiñán Rodríguez, president of the Provincial Assembly of People's Power, said that in the state sector there is an urgent need for greater risk perception, and before each focus in any entity, rigor must leave an administrative mark. And he sentenced: "The economic cost of the campaign is considerable. The health of the people is at risk. So we solve this or we solve it. "
Such an attitude should serve as an incentive for the population to understand the magnitude of the problem, especially if it is known that most of the foci are detected inside the houses, especially in low tanks. The situation of the houses closed to the fumigation is also inadmissible, and Ernesto Santiesteban exposed the importance of facing this indiscipline, because "a closed house makes us lose the job".
The chief prosecutor of the province, Elda Barreiro, said that in each health area there is a prosecutor to accompany the prophylactic work, but also to act with severity before the crime of spreading epidemics, attributable to the refusal of the residents to fumigate, to enter hospitals, among other issues.
For his part, Manuel Hernández, vice president of the Council of Provincial Administration (CAP), explained the changes in the work system as of this week, in order to achieve greater organization, foresight, and accountability if they don´t fulfill the indicated functions.
There is no more important task than this. And every Holguin citizen must be involved.
