Members of the 41st contingent of the Venceremos Brigade in solidarity with Cuba demanded the immediate release of five Cuban antiterrorists who remain unjustly imprisoned in the United States since 1998. At the Julio Antonio Mella International Camp in Caimito, Habana province, the US solidarity activists met with Olga Salanueva and Magali Llort, the respective wives of Rene Gonzalez and Fernando Gonzalez, who —along with Gerardo Hernandez, Antonio Guerrero and Ramon Labañino— were arrested and given harsh and unjust sentences for monitoring anti-Cuba extremist groups in South Florida that were planning and carrying out terrorist attacks against the island. Also present in the meeting was Fernando’s mother, Rosa Aurora Freijanes, who gave details of the case of the Cuban Five, as these men are internationally known. Speaking to ACN, Kathe Karlson, who heads the solidarity group, also condemned Washington’s almost |
50-year-old economic, commercial and financial blockade of Cuba. Another member of the brigade, Heidi Lopez, criticized the silence of the American mainstream media and the US Government over the case of the Cuban Five and called it an injustice and a violation of the American people’s right to be informed. The Venceremos Brigade was founded in 1969 and it is the oldest US group in solidarity with Cuba. This contingent, which arrived in Cuba on July 11 and will stay in the island until Sunday, is comprised of 33 people, mainly youths, from seven American states. Thus far, they have participated in voluntary works in the agricultural sector and have met with members of Cuban political, social and grass-roots organizations. They have visited the provinces of Matanzas, Cienfuegos, Villa Clara and Habana. They have also participated in workshops and lectures about Cuba’s reality and have visited places of historic interest.
