More than a hundred primary, secondary, pre-university, technical-vocational and nursery schools were recovered in the province of Holguín after the damages caused by Hurricane Irma as it passed through Cuba.
Ridel Campaña, specialist in the investment department of the Provincial Directorate of Education, confirmed that they are working hard to recover, in the shortest possible time, the 174 educational facilities affected in the territory.
Campaña explained that with the exception of the schools Ángel Romero and Antonio Maceo, in the towns of Naranjo Dulce and El Predio, in the municipality of Sagua de Tánamo, which suffered total collapse, the rest only had partial damages, mainly in roofs and facades.
The 42 students who attended these two schools of the Turquino Plan resumed teaching activities in the television rooms of their localities, an alternative that seeks not to affect the successful development of the current school period.
Campaña ratified the commitment of the provincial Education Directorate to restore the necessary technical and structural conditions in all damaged schools, which are expected to be ready by 90 percent by the end of September.
Hurricane Irma struck two thousand 262 educational centers across the country; among them 260 nursery schools, 131 primary schools, 89 special schools, 275 secondary schools and 84 pre-university schools.
At the passing of the meteor 510 educational institutions served as evacuation centers, where about 50 thousand evacuated people were received.
