The extension of the Provincial Historical Archive of Holguín, where there are more than two thousand documents of patrimonial value, is part of the strategy to preserve the funds sheltered on the site, located in the center of the city.
Zenaida Reyes, director of the facility, indicated that the restoration will contribute to improving the conditions of overcrowding of some materials currently kept in boxes or transferred to other institutions, which hinders the conservation strategy.
This measure will allow users access to old funds, used as a reference in scientific research, urban development projects and studies on the culture and traditions of the eastern city, he said.
He specified that the extension of the premises will also increase the efficiency of the plans of protection against natural disasters, fundamentally of files of value 1, susceptible to the humidity and the variations of temperature.
As part of the projects to conserve the materials, the digitization of funds from the 20th century is also carried out, which in 2017 included more than 400 volumes on sugar production in eastern Cuba.
In the Holguín Archive there are funds from the 17th to the 20th centuries, among them the notarial protocols and acts referring to the plaza system and the colonial dwellings of the former Hato de San Isidoro.
Currently, the institution provides services to some two thousand users per year, in internal loans and photocopies and printing.
