Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez signed the UN Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons today in New York at the opening ceremony of joining the multilateral instrument.

Another 40 countries endorsed the initiative adopted last July 7, which establishes the prohibition of development, testing, production, acquisition, possession, storage and transfer, as well as the threat of use of these devices considered a serious danger to human survival, Prensa Latina news agency reported.

The agreement includes the obligation to assist victims and to address environmental damage arising from nuclear-weapon-testing, and leaves open the possibility that the so-called possessor states to join the treaty once meeting the requirements set out in it.

Cuba said in a press release that the signing of the instrument is a fundamental step forward towards nuclear disarmament, which will significantly contribute to achieve a world free of nuclear weapons.

The Caribbean island ratified its commitment to the goal of freeing the human species from the danger that today represents the existence of 15,000 of these means of extermination, some 1,800 of them ready for use.

With this treaty, the international community made it clear that nuclear weapons are not only inhuman, immoral and ethically indefensible; but also illegal, Rodriguez stated.

Before declaring the convention open, Antonio Guterres, UN Secretary-General, described it as historic and thanked the countries that promoted and supported it, as well as the civil society.

The initiative, first multilateral instrument of disarmament achieved in the last two decades, will come into force 90 days after its ratification by 50 States.
